Waterford Viking Marathon 2018

RACE REPORT

The Waterford Viking Marathon had some scorching hot weather today. The extreme hot conditions took it's toll as the Marathon distance was cancelled due to medical concerns. The safety of runners was the main concern, which cannot be taken lightly. However, the Half Marathon and Quarter Marathon went ahead as planned. The atmosphere at the start line was superb. This event has one of the best start line atmospheres in the country. The runners finished in the grounds of WIT Arena. These state of the art facilities were fantastic for participants. Showers, changing rooms and a cafe to cool down were most welcome. Over 2,300 runners signed up for this year's event with nearly 1,900 finishers. This was a real test in some grueling hot conditions. Well done to all runners and staff on dealing with these hot conditions.

The Quarter Marathon was won by Andrew Connick of Ferrybank AC. Andrew was also part of the Corporate team challenge won by Local sports shop Alfie Hale Sports . In 2nd place was David Mansfield of Clonmel AC and also a member of Alfie Hale Sports. 3rd place was Noel Murphy of Waterford AC.

The female winner was Louise Morgan also of Ferrybank AC with Julieanne Woodcock 2nd and Orna Murray of Ferrybank AC 3rd.

It was a good day for some clubs in particular over both events. Ferrybank AC, Raheny Shamrock AC, Waterford AC and West Waterford AC all performed well.

The Half Marathon, which also included the Marathon participants was won by Freddy Stukk of Raheny Shamrock AC. 2nd and 3rd went to previous winner Trevor Power of Waterford AC and Alexander Wallace. The female winner was Ruth Fitzgerald of Waterford AC, with Tara Kennedy of Raheny Shamrock AC in 2nd place. Grace Kennedy of Donore Harries took 3rd spot.
