Ras Na hEireann 2019

RACE REPORT

The 50th Larry McGuill Ras Na h Eireann XC took place in Oldbridge Co. Meath hosted by Dunleer A.C (Louth). This long standing traditional event attracted over 700 runners from all corners of the country along with some overseas athletes also taking part. The Ras has now been re named after the main contributing founder Larry McGuill passed away a number of years ago. The Ras also has strong connections with the Armagh International 5k that took place on the previous Thursday with some of those top athletes showing again. For many years both events work together on providing some great enjoyment for athletes and clubs. This year was very special to reach it's 50th anniversary.

The traditional children's races which has now become a strong part of the Ras started at 12 noon with the girls under 9, and finishing with the Boys U17. All races were very well attended showing that the future of the Ras looks very bright. The Tradition will live on for many more generations to come by looking at the popularity of these underage races.

There was a real sense of family, club affiliation and old friendships been re iginited at today's event.

The adults races consisted of 3 events. The Men's 6k, The Ladies 4k and a new Mixed 3k. The new 3k allowed runners to enjoy a 3k without having to battle the longer distances. This suited new comers looking to test the waters of cross country, and also enables those who may not be fully fit early in the year to run the more competitive races.

The USA Athletes had some great success taking top spot in both the Ladies 4k and Men's 6k. There was some real top quality athletes on show matching what this event is well renowned for. Joanna Thompson won the ladie's race in 13mins flat. The men's 6k race was won in a superb time of 17:52. Ireland and the USA battled it out for the International team award. The US had a narrow 10 pts to 11

pts win over the host nation. Age category and club team medals were fought for further down the field in both the Men's and Ladie's races.
