Tonight's review is from Emer Carty of Carrick-On-Shannon AC who ran a consistent 23:45 in Foxford, 23:47 in Ballyhaunis and 23:09 on a slower course in Castlebar tonight.
''The 3rd race of the Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Summer 5k Series brought us to Castlebar on a relatively dry evening. Participants got to take in some great views of Lough Lannagh as the race headed clockwise around the lake.
Castlebar provided the toughest course so far in the series which was reflected in the overall results. Runners faced a strong opening breeze early in the race as they headed towards the steepest part of the course. Another incline after the 2km mark on a well marshalled route and it was downhill from here. Westport's Shaun Mc Laughlin led home the race in a steady time of 16.34 with over a minute to spare ahead of Mayo AC's Patrick Morrison.
In the women's race Colette Tuohy had a comfortable finish with a time of 19.21 over club mate Angela O'Connor.
Overall feedback from the evening suggests Mayo AC pulled off another spectacular evening. We're already looking forward to next week, but for the moment thanks for having us Castlebar.''
The Lough Lannagh circuit was the setting for the third race in 2017 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Summer 5k Series which took place at Castlebar this evening. It was a bright and breezy over the bridge on a cool June 13℃ evening. It’s a challenging course – run clockwise this year – with a hilly mid section.
The 140 finishers were led home by Shaun McLaughlin in 16:24, half a minute slower than his second place in the first series race at Foxford. He was out on his own all the way, well ahead of a strong run by Pat Morrison in 17:55. Ivan Cawley (Ballina AC), second last week in Ballyhaunis, battled all the way with Dwayne Flynn for third with the Mayo AC runner hauling him in in the final kilometre to finish 6 seconds ahead in 18:13. So, that’s three different winners so far in the Series.
Colette Tuohy (Mayo AC) ran her trademark strong race to win the women’s race in an excellent 19:19. Another formidable masters athlete Angela O’Connor finished second in 20:41, and fifteen seconds faster than her second place finish here last year . As in the men’s race, the third place on the podium was fought out between two runners, with Lisa Mulvihill just edging out Serena Duffy who led her all the way, with both Ballina AC athletes recorded at 21:56.
Well done to Ann McDonnell who led the organising crew and to all the volunteers who helped. Thanks also Gardai, Order of Malta for their presence.
