Bweeng Trail Blazers hosted their 5k with great success. Bweeng village is located just west of Mallow and is a hot bed of running just like many parts of Cork county. And just like many Cork road races the hospitality and great sense of community is very strong. Community spirit is alive and kicking in Cork.
Running is very much part of the community in Bweeng and the Mallow area. As we drove through Mallow around 7.30am and towards Bweeng scores of runners were seen on the roads all out for their weekly long run. Bweeng Trail Blazers members are all runners who put a race on for runners from elte level to joggers and walkers. The local GAA club provided a central area for registration and after teas, coffees, home made cates and food.
The pre-race line up was a mouth watering affair with word that Peter Samba of Dunboyne AC and Jake O'Regan of St. Johns AC would be taking to the start line along with some other fine athletes in the 15 minute standard. We had a bit of a surprise as Jake O'Regan who was full of confidence went out hard from the start and burned off the competition. In the process he broke the course record by 6 seconds in a time of 14:22. The competition for places after Jake were hotly contested with James Hayes of Cork Track Club tating 2nd and Leevale athlete Eric Curran in 3rd.
The Women's race was won by pre race favourite Sinead O'Connor of Leevale AC who had good company with club mate Jessica Coyne by her side. Sinead had 23 seconds to spare as she crossed the line. In 3rd was another Leevale athlete Michelle Kenny. Leevale were the standout performers on the day with some great times run by their runners.
Age categories were also awarded after the race in Race HQ. Well done to Bweeng Trail Blazers and the participants who contributed to another successful race. Full race results can be viewed by clicking on the Results button below.
