RACE REPORT

The  Waterford Half Marathon was another top class event with over 2,600 signing up to this year's event. This was on a par with the largest event in 2019. It's easy to see why this is a popular Half Marathon on the race calendar. Waterford AC hosted the event and they nailed every aspect of the management of the race. 

The facility of having the WIT Arena made this ideal for runners giving them all they need from an event and helping create an incredible atmosphere. Car parking, Race HQ and close proximity to both the start and finish lines were all part of what makes  a top venue. The amount of marshals and coordination from Waterford AC members and local Gardai also was very evident. 

The race itself brought out some big guns and well known athletes as can be seen from the results. 

For much of the race it was a tight affair in the men's race but Ryan Creech of Leevale AC pulled away in the latter stages for a fine performance winning in a time of 65:02.  Former winner Jared Derese of Carrick ACE's followed Ryan. In 3rd was Sergui Cionbanu of Clonliffe Harriers.

 
The women's favorite Aoife Cooke of Eagle AC did not disappoint, running a superb time of 72:58. She had a very comfortable win and was well up the ranking in the overall race. 2nd place was Fiona Kehoe of Kilmore AC and in 3rd was Aoife O'Leary of Sportsworld RC. 

The course had its ups and downs as this is what you get to expect in Waterford. However, fast times were run as the hills were favourable when most needed near the end of the race.
