The Bundoran 10 Race

RACE REPORT

The new look Bundoran 10 Mile was another huge hit with participants and also with the local community of Bundoran. Over 1,100 runners signed up to the challenge with runners from all parts of the country arriving to the Scenic Donegal town. Bundoran is normally known to be the surfing capital of Ireland and tourist hot spot of the north west. It can now add the 10 Mile Road Race to it's standout list of characteristics. The event raises thousands of euros for charity. Local athletics club Tir Chonaill AC are very much instrumental in organising and making this great event happen each year. Runners, joggers and walkers all experiences a fabulous day out. The Bundoran 10 first started on the same date the 5th of March 2011.

The walkers headed off at 10 am with some glorious spring weather to welcome them off. The main race itself started at 11 am. This is always a very competitive race and this year was no different. Both the men's and women's races provided some fine racing and performances.

In the mens race Jake O'Regan from St.John's AC in Clare smashed the current course record in a time of 48:40. This is the 2nd consecutive week that Jake has broken course records. Last week he broke the Adare 10k in Limerick. Jake is is some fine form at the moment. He was followed in by 2nd placed athlete Eoin Mullan of Omagh Harriers. In 3rd place was Tudor Moldovan of Clonliffe Harriers. The top 3 show how well the race was represented by clubs from all over the country north and south. The weather conditions were out of this world for running. The sun was shining with very little breeze paving the way for some great racing. All this fabulous weather just added to a great occasion.

The women's race was very well contested. Eimear Gormley of Letterkenny AC was this year's winner in a time of 1:04:52. The top 5 ladies were all awarded prizes and they were certainly fought tooth and mail for. Cora Regan of Drumshanbo AC was 2nd closely behind in 3rd was the well long standing and fine athlete Donna Evans of Clones AC. Donna who is in the over 50 category is still performing at a top level. Like the mens race the women's race was very well represented by club athletes from all over the country.

This race seems to attract so many types of runners and you can see why with the high level of organisation and great atmosphere that is created on the day.
