RACE REPORT

The East Cork Harbour Marathon 2018 was yet another sell out event. Despite allocating and opening for more entries than ever, the event still sold out days before.

The recent hot and dry weather deserted today's event and we witnessed some very wet conditions, leaving it extremely tough on runners. The runners braved these conditions and made their way around the East Cork Harbour area and surrounding villages.

Spirits were not dampened as the high organistational standards of the event shined through to over come the adverse weather. Aghada GAA was the location for race HQ and the finish line. Hot food including home made burgers greeted the runners as they crossed the line. The event had 3 distances 10k, Half Marathon and Full Marathon.

The 10k was the first event to cross the finish line with East Cork AC's Kevin O'Leary winning. The legend figure of Irish long distance running Catherina Mckiernan was the female winner. Both winners were a popular hit with the crowd that cheered them home.

The Half Marathon winner was Mark Smith of Eagle AC. The female winner was Julie Kenneally of Youghal AC.

The Marathon winner was David Ryan of Clonmel AC with Rachel Stokes winning the female category. This course was not the easiest to contend with. Runners for both the Half Marathon and Marathon encountered some challenging sections.

Huge credit must go to all those who contributed to organising a fantastic event. The East Cork community has backed this event and taken great pride to welcome all runners and participants to the area. Well done to all involved. The chosen charity was Marymount Hospital in Cork.

Age category results were yet again very strongly contested.
