Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon was another huge success today with a record number of just under 2,400 runners signing up for the hugely popular festive fun event. The West Cork town came to life today with an electric atmosphere created by both the Run Clon Crew and participants. Runners descended upon the town from as early as Thursday coming all the way from Boston. There has been a fantastic relationship between the event and the Boston Marathon over that last number of years. One noticeable participant was Ambi Burfoot of the famous Runners World Magazine and a previous winner of the Boston Marathon. Closer to home runners from every part of Ireland took to the start line. The challenging course seemed to boost runners moral and enjoyment of the event. This was one of the finest Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon event Success's to date over it's 8 year history.
A Major part of today's event was aimed to promote "Peace" at this special time of year. Balloons were released in the air to mark this celebration of peace before the race started. This year saw a record number of Wheelchair participants take part.
Frank Greally of the Irish Runner Magazine entertained the crowds with some witty comments, fun and a small bit of dancing...
A Special mention to the Hilliard family who organise the event:
Just over a month ago Phil Hilliard "Mother" to the event organisers passed away. Phil was an integral part of the Marathon. Well done on a fantastic event that Phil would have been very proud of . She was certainly minding the show today....
