Brooks Armagh 5K International Road Race

RACE REPORT

The 2018 Armagh International 5k was another huge success this evening. This event has captured the hearts and minds of Armagh and beyond. Thousands lined the Streets of Armagh to watch world class Athletes take to the start line. Athletes from Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Poland, Belguim and the USA all made the trip. The evening started with under age childrens races followed by the mens and womens 3k. The 5k was the most eagerly awaited race with some world class athletes on show.

The atmosphere was building in the Mall area of Armagh from early afternoon. There was a huge sense of excitement and anticipation before the 3k adult womens race started. There is no other event in the country this year, that could match the noise levels from the supporters who line the streets.. The frightening pace at which these athletes ran added to the atmosphere.

The Ladies 3k race was fast and furious with Laura Weightman and Jessica Judd battling all the way. They provided the onlookers with some fine racing over 3 laps. Again like last year with an identical time Laura Weightman took top spot in a time of 8:59.

The time had come for the main event. This race did not disappoint. The race had a record number of 97 runners 15 mins and under. This was a staggering achievement and something that is rarely seen in any road race in the world. The winner Sam Stabler ran just under the 14 mins in a time of 13:59. 2nd place was a past winner Charlie Hulson in a time of 14mins.

The final race of the night was the 3k mens race. This was another gripping event with a large field of runners. The winner of this one was Michal Rozmys of Poland.
