AON Mullingar Half Marathon 2018

RACE REPORT

The AON Mullingar Half Marathon attracted another huge crowd on St. Patricks Day. Over 1,400 runners signed up for this extremely popular event in Mullingar. Despite a very cold morning, runners arrived into the town centre for the 10.30 am start . Runners took extra time to warm up and once the race start time approached the atmosphere was red hot. Runners from all over the country traveled to take on the midlands course, which generally provides for good times.This year was no different with some blistering times ran by some fine athletes. On the start line runners eyed each other up wondering who was going to win the battles on route.

The men's race was closely contested with a group of runners fighting it out all the way. The top 3 runners kept each other thinking and maneuvering all the way to the finish. A battle between Johnny Daly, last years winner Peter Mooney and Sean McGloughlin of Wesport AC took the race right to the end. Johnny Daly had the final kick coming down the home straight to take victory. Johnny's tack running background was his secret weapon in gaining victory.

The Ladies favourite Maria McCambridge of DSD AC did not disappoint with a good win. This was Maria's 2nd win over the last 7 days, after taking top spot in last weeks Meath Spring Half Marathon in Bohermeen.
