EVENT REPORT

The 39th Axa Raheny 5 hosted by Raheny Shamrock A.C. was yet another huge success. Over 4,600 signed up for this mecca race and a further 700 for the children's races. The Raheny 5 as an event has huge character and mirrors what the club is all about. Community spirit, participation and the big welcome is at the core. These strong traits of the Raheny 5 transcends across the country and evident by the amount of runners that came from every part of the country.

The race start of 3pm allows so many runners to travel from all over the country to witness the Raheny big race feel and atmosphere. It's hard to beat anywhere in the country. The tradition of the race runs deep within the running community and beyond. The kids races beforehand makes this a real family day out that always creates a fantastic atmosphere.

The race itself is just what we wanted as spectators and onlookers. Commentators Dick Hooper of Raheny Shamrock A.C. and Susan Walsh of Crusaders A.C. teamed up again to give us great excitement as they had the live feed of which athletes were in the reckoning and shake up for the race.

Ryan Creech, Mitchelle Byrne, Ben Branagh and Ian Guiden were all fighting it out right to the last 1 km or so. Ryan Creech of Leevale A.C. turned on the burners in the last 500m to storm home for a great victory in a time of 23:53. Mitchelle Byrne of Rathfarnham WSAF was 2nd and Ben Branagh of St. Malachy's A.C. was 3rd.

The women's race was won by Ann Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny A.C. in a time of 26:43. Ann Marie fought off some tough competition by Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill of West Limerick A.C. and in 3rd was Sinead O'Connor of Leevale A.C.

The men's team winners were Clonliffe Harriers and the master men's team winners were host club Raheny Shamrock A.C.  The women's team winners were  Leevale A.C. with Raheny in 2nd. Raheny Shamrock A.C. were also the master women's team winners.

The famous goodie bag received by runners is also a phenomenal feat by the the club. Over 4,000 bags with over 13 bars and treats make this an amazing logistical operation taking over a week for the volunteers of the club to pack.
This is truly and great race. Son of the late race director Pat Hooper, Dave Hooper has certainly took on the baton and ran with it. This was a seamless event that was made possible by all the club volunteers, local Gardai, St. Anne's Park and many other locals.

We are looking forward to the 40th Axa Raheny 5 in 2024.
