Waterford Viking Marathon 2016

RACE REPORT

Another great year For the WLR Waterford Viking Marathon. Over 2,000 took to the Viking City of Waterford. This event keeps going from strength to strength. This is a wonderful route taking in many parts of the historic city and heading out to some fantastic rural settings. The race started in the city outside the iconic and world renowned Waterford Crystal Building. The atmosphere was electric. The excitement and friendly atmosphere was enjoyed by all, by both participant's and onlookers.

The weather conditions were not as warm as what we have recently endured. However, there was a strong breeze making it difficult for runners.

The Finish line was also ideally located in the RSC (Regional Sports Centre) on the colourful and striking blue running track. Again the atmosphere was second to none. Runners entered the track to the sound of music and commentary with a full lap to complete their event.

After the runners completed their run, any amount of food offerings was available. This year saw record numbers from overseas. A special mention goes to Marathon Club Japan who brought many runners and plenty of colour to the event.

The winner of the Quarter Marathon was Ruairi O'Donnell of Ferrybank AC.

The winner of the Half Marathon was the very popular and high class Athlete, Sergui Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers

The Female winner of the Half Marathon was Molly Munn from the USA

The winner of this years Marathon was Philip Harty of West Waterford AC. Philip won the Cork City Marathon earlier in the month.

The Female winner was Tullamore Harriers, Pauline Curley who was also fresh from her City Of Derry Marathon win. Pauline and Philip were extremely popular winners today.

Team prizes were awarded to the Marathon only. Marathon Club Ireland won the male and female categories. Marathon Club Ireland have won the team prize for 2 years running.
