Nearly 2,000 runners returned to Clonakilty for the Waterfront Marathon. Runners from all over the country got into the party atmosphere from Friday night with plenty of entertainment the night before. The party mood transferred into Saturday morning with an electrical atmosphere at the Start Line. Frank Greally of Irish Runner Magazine and Ray O' Connor provided great commentary with their knowledge of the runners and background stories.
The race was started off by Team Kerr Wheelchair Team along side Marathon Club Ireland runners. They were closely followed by the main start with Sergui Ciobanu and Gary O' Hanlon looking for their 4th consecutive titles in the Half Marathon & Marathon. The excitement never stopped as Elaine Murphy had a Finish Line experience she will never forget. Her Boyfriend made a marriage proposal and of course she did not let the crowd down with big yes..
The weather conditions made life very difficult on the course. The blustery conditions gave the runners a testing time and this was reflected in their times. This gave rise to a higher sense of pride and satisfaction for runners when they finished. There was a real feel and sense of contentment and a look of joy on runners faces and they were treated to complimentary Clonakilty Black Pudding, Sausages and hot drinks. The Quality Hotel, where the Start and Finish Line was based provided excellent facilities for food, showers and changing facilities. This all created a great vibe among the crowd
Gary O' Hanlon of Run Hub Winning The Marathon
The 10k event was won by Gareth Lordan of Clonakilty Road Runners and the female winner of the 10k was Anna O Neill of Doheny AC.The Half Marathon had no surprise as Sergiu Ciobanu took his 4th title in a row. The female winner was Karen Walsh. Again, with the Marathon there was no doubt in Gary O' Hanlon winning his 4th tile in as many years.
